I sent a package to the east coast and sent it three day Priority Mail. It took 8 days! Someone sent me a package from the east coast 3 day Priority Mail and it took over a week. Now I ordered stamps from the USPS and guess what? They sent them Priority Mail and here it is a week later and nothing. From the damned Postal Service no less. They cannot get their own parcels or envelopes in a timely manner!
Okay, what goes on? I heard that because so many commercial flights are cancelled due to COVID-19, there are fewer planes to ship Priority Mail which usually goes via air. So the postal service ships by ground and it then takes at least a week coast to coast, or in the case of the stamps, a week or more from the Midwest to California. Of course you have to pay the same outrageous Priority Mail fee regardless of how they decide to send your package or letter. In contacting the USPS their answer is wait ten more days and then file a claim. Idiots!
UPS and FedEx use their own planes so they don't do this. If you ship two day air it goes by air. Ship ground and it goes ground. They guarantee their services and the post office does not. Unless you use Express Mail they could care less about timely service. And good luck in making a claim for lost or undelivered packages. They take an eternity, IF you ever get reimbursed, and make you think you did something wrong rather than them. And of course, your postage cost is gone forever.
When mailing for the holidays, ship early. I am talking about right after Thanksgiving or even sooner. If their current handling of mail and parcels is any indication of their performance, two weeks or more could become the norm. Maybe if they would get rid of the dead wood at the post offices and distribution centers we could have Amazon like performance for a decent cost. Of course, that will never happen. The unions protect the dead wood and I know from people who are actually good workers how difficult it is to get rid of a poor or non-performing employee in the postal service.
It simply amazes me at the inefficiency of the United States Postal Service. The lack of training, inefficient shipping and plain idiots who handle our mail leaves little doubt on why the system is always in trouble.
For example, we have mail to be picked up and have even purchased large labels asking that it be scanned. Hmm...latest is the the idiot who picks up the mail just leaves it in the box and never takes it. We not only have to place notes that say SCAN ME but also PLEASE TAKE WITH YOU AND SCAN! WTF? And they complain that people are not supporting them. Why should we when we now have alternate means to ship most larger parcels.
I have an item coming from overseas and it arrives within 3 days at Los Angeles. Then it sits for 4 days before it moves to the relay facility who then ships it 38 miles further away from where the destination is. What? The distance from LA to here is about 90 miles but they ship it north an additional 38 miles so it is now 128 miles away. And it took then how many days to do that?
I have to laugh when Royal Mail can get things overseas in less than 3 days and it then takes the USPS another week to get it less than 100 miles to the end point. Brits, don't complain about your Post, just be glad our government is not running it and bailing it out.
Complain to the USPS and it does little to ever correct the situation. Apparently the hiring process is no better than it was over 50 years ago, with IQ absolutely not a requirement to handle or deliver mail. Every time we get a new mail carrier, we need to trade mail with neighbors. Hell, when we get a good mail carrier, they transfer them somewhere else. We just get the dregs.
Amazon can deliver in a day or two and the USPS can not. Amazon does it for free with Prime and even with Priority Mail you never know when things will be delivered. Pay 18 dollars for a large box with two day delivery and it even says two day on the label and it takes four or five. And the USPS just yawns again.
And the government, the taxpayers, just continue to bail out this archaic system. Privatize it and we will pay more they say, but maybe we will actually get timely service? I've never had FedEx or UPS fail to pick up a package so why can't the USPS do it? Food for thought.
UPDATE: The registered mail, which the USPS touts as being ultra secure and handled so carefully, was never scanned by the local post office before going out for delivery. I called in and asked if it was out for delivery and was told it must be because it is not here? WTF? That is secure?
Add to that the news this past weekend that 33 employees of the USPS either had warrants or were arrested for stealing mail and/or its contents. One person stole 199 cell phones and they found 43,000 pieces of mail at another postal workers house! One of them is the ex-president of the Mail Handlers Union! And, the news last week also showed surveillance video of a mail person dumping mail in a dumpster so she didn't have to deliver it. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-usps-mail-theft-20160827-snap-story.html
Okay, where does it really end? Frankly, I am now convinced that the U. S. Postal Service does not give a rats ass about their clients in any way shape or form.
If you have read my past posts on this miserable mail service we have, you know the type of disservice we get. It actually has been getting worse. Let me tell you how:
1. I wrote a complaint to the U. S. Postmaster Generals Office of the Inspector General. After several weeks I received an e-mail telling me that it's not their job to follow up on mail handling problems. They are only interested in fraud, abuse, waste, etc. Waste? And what is this about ensuring efficiency and integrity? Good God,this must have been written by the same politico that wrote stuff for the Fast and Furious program and the IRS and NSA abuse programs. Amazing that they turn a blind eye to this and then wonder why they are going bankrupt. What the hell do they think these employees are doing when they don't handle the mail properly? But no, they can't bother dealing with small shippers or clients so screw us. Here's the gist of their response:
"The primary responsibility of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General is to prevent, detect, and report fraud, waste, and misconduct; and to conduct independent audits and investigations of Postal Service programs and operations to ensure their efficiency and integrity.
The issues raised in your correspondence do not fall within the jurisdiction of this office. These matters do appear to be within the jurisdiction of the office listed below. Therefore, we are forwarding your complaint to them for their review and direct response to you.

2. The above refer us to the local USPS Consumer Affairs office in our area who sends us a wonderful...form letter telling us to use the web site or 1-800 number. Yes, the one with terminal hold or the one that doesn't get you any useful information. Oh and the web site that will get you an e-mail from your local post office with some bull crap saying they are doing all they can to deliver for you.
3. I call the Consumer Affairs office and they try and bullshit you so it appears they actually are doing something and tell you to call the local post office, which doesn't have a phone number. Finally, after 20 minutes or so, the idiot at the consumer affairs office promises to escalate the case "upstairs" to an Area Manager who will call me within two working days. It's now been over a week and no contact. So much for case escalation. Must be to the circular file. Incidentally, the "hard working" Consumer Affairs Office for the San Diego District is only open from 9AM to 3PM 5 days a week. That's just 30 hours those poor people must work their fingers to the bone. Poor postal workers hard at work for the consumers. Right. You have to move off your ass to move the mail or move the dead wood, neither of which seems to be a likelihood. Will I ever hear from the Area Manager? I really doubt it. Chatter has it that he doesn't want to be bothered with complaints, wants consumers to call the worthless 1-800 line or use the USPS web site too. More customer disservice. And they wonder why they lose money?
4. Mail does not get scanned when it's outgoing. We have packages that leave Carlsbad 92011 and never get scanned until they reach an East Coast destination. Lately, we have had mail for other people placed in our mail box and packages for other people placed in a hold box and the key left in our mail box. We hand delivered the box to the right person. A high value parcel was left 4 blocks away at another address in front of a gate for at least a day before a neighbor noticed it and asked the resident if she knew it was there. The elderly person never opens that gate, and luckily the sprinklers did not come on or the contents would have been ruined. Is the freaking mail person dyslexic or what?
5. The local post office takes no accountability for their screw-ups. The supervisors say they will talk to the carriers or will fix the issues but the issues simply continue. And when packages are not scanned at the post office after being sorted there, how is that the carriers fault? It's an epidemic of slovenly labor that is perpetuated by a postal labor system that allows dead wood employees to remain on the job for years long after their efficiency should have been rated incompetent. Just go to the post office on a busy day and watch a clerk suddenly close his or her window and walk away because it's their break time, no matter how long the line is, thus prolonging your wait time. It happens all the time. Because that's how the system works. Snails pace, unlikely to be fired or disciplined and screw the customers. That's unless you are one of the few route carriers that actually work their butts off and deliver the mail and provide great customer service. We know one or two and they are few and far between.
6. Carrier Pickup is a hit and miss proposition. When the carrier doesn't get the pickup order from the post office, of course they do not know to pick up your waiting packages. So later in the day you have to call the post office and ask why your priority mail was not picked up. This is a case where one blames the other. The post office makes it seem like the carrier is the idiot who forgot to pick up your package when in reality, the supervisor or whoever handles the pickup notices at the post office never gives the carrier the pickup notice, so how would the carrier know to pick up the package? We have actually had the carrier come the next day with the notice to show us she never received the notice until a day late. WE are considering changing to FedEx and UPS if this continues. Just not worth the hassle as you never know if your packages will be picked up or not. And you have to laugh at their $20 pickup charge outside your normal pickup hours. They don't guarantee they will pickup at any special time for that $20...maybe not at all. Read the fine print and then DO NOT USE IT!
7. Wait...you just needed the Spiderman boxes? How about delivering the freaking mail, eejits and forget the stupid boxes. You aren't Super Heroes by a long shot. Your performance is more like Super Zeros.....00000000000..absolutely nothing to brag about at all.
I'll be laughing with every package that I ship by FedEx because it's another ten or twenty bucks that the USPS won't get in their coffers. Multiply me by thousands and then tens of thousands, they will soon be bankrupt. And I'll be telling my Congressman and Senator just exactly why not to support these eejits in the future.
The U.S. Postal Service spends what appears to be millions of dollars on commercials telling us how much better their service is now, with more frequent scanning of packages and the new two and three day Priority Mail service. It's so good, the two and three day service is printed right there on your label for all to see. Plus they now have spent untold dollars more to use Spiderman as a mascot in their website. Must be because his hands stick to the mail and slow it down, just like the slowness of many real USPS employees.
Well, hold on a moment. First of all, I have been informed that the two and three days labeling is no more than hype by the Postal Service. I guess something to soothe the public as they once again raised rates on their lackadaisical and lackluster service. The two and three day statement only means that they will attempt to get the package there in two or three days but it could take longer and there is absolutely no guarantee how long. Nor is there any recourse if the package take a week or more to arrive. The only guaranteed service is Express Mail which is now called Priority Mail Express, where it's delivered the next day overnight or you can fight to get your postage fees back.
Two or three days can mean 8 days as we found out in early December. Not wanting to chance late delivery, we shipped very early via Priority Mail with the "two day" statement on the labels. two packages to the same address. One arrived 4 business days later and one 8 days later. What happened to the two days? And why didn't they arrive the same day? First Class mail, which used to take one day within a city now takes two or three many times, and cross country flat envelopes can take several weeks, depending on the post office. I've had flats to New Hampshire swirling around and around for up to two weeks and finally had to call the local New Hampshire post office to see what was going on and have them track the piece of mail. No help but a few days later it was delivered.
Scanning is terrible. Mail is often picked up and never scanned until late in the day at the post office. The carrier is supposed to scan the packages at pickup but they often do not. Must we post a note on all packages to please scan at pickup to assure the packages get scanned? Interim scanning is spotty at best. We have had packages that were never scanned at all until they were delivered. Sometimes they are not even scanned at delivery, and in the case of an item of value, have to rely on the recipients honesty, as if they state they never received it, we have no way to prove it was received. We're then out the money and the Postal Service can't track it either. Oh, did I mention the Postal Service doesn't consider anything "lost" until 30 days have passed?
Packages that end up on the wrong truck or in the wrong bin for delivery and re held up for days require a call to the Post Office as they will not find their mistake. We had a package that was out for delivery for two days and finally called to see what was going on. A supervisor stated it was in the wrong "bin" and we could come in and get it or he would place it in the correct bin for next day delivery. If we hadn't called, I wonder how many days it would have gone along on that cycle?
Sort Centers are another problem where mail can sit for days unless it is handled properly. But again, adequate supervision and getting rid of the dead wood at these stations would go a long way towards moving the mail more efficiently.
The first class postage rate increase to 49 cents was noted to be temporary an is supposed to be reduced to 47 cents as soon as the Postal Service bails itself out of the current mess it is in. Fat chance! With the type service we are getting, we're starting to rely more heavily on other services that have more time defined delivery and better customer services,
Speaking of customer services, the USPS really sucks at that. They have a toll-free line that lets you sit on hold eternally because either they have so many complaints they can't handle them or they really don't want to know what you have to say. Send in a written or e-mail complaint and you get a response from your local post office even if the issue is not with them. Then they want all the specifics, so you need to scan and cut and paste and send it to the original place where you couldn't send it to in the first place. You know you don't get an e-mail for your local PO to do so.
So, when the Postal Service wonders why they're going bankrupt, it's simple. The service is really bad and getting worse. And customer service is bad. Been to a Post Office with 30 people in line and watched a clerk close his window because it's his time to go on break? While you stand in line even longer as nobody comes to open his window? That's difficult to explain to the customers who have businesses of their own or children crying or taking time from their jobs. I was informed that's the way it's run and the union rules. Break time comes and all else stops...screw the customers. If you ran your business they way, you wouldn't survive either.
So, people turn to e-mail, texting, paperless banking, paperless bill paying, FedEx, UPS, OnTrac, and all sorts of other alternatives to the Postal Service. For years, it was not cost effective to use FedEx for consumers shipping packages, but with the new ground services available, in many cases it's less costly than the Postal Service. With 5 day delivery, $100 of insurance included too.
April 24, 2014:
Here's yet another view of the stellar service I receive. A package with "2 Day" service gets to San Diego, CA yesterday. Leaves that facility last night yet doesn't make it to my post office less than 35 miles away to be delivered today. Thus two day turns into three day at best. Why?

NOTE: The $100 Insurance you actually pay for. I shipped three articles out Priority Mail and wanted to insure them for $100 and the USPS wanted me to pay an additional $2+ for the insurance over $50 which was free. So the "included" is a bunch of bull in my opinion.
Speaking of scanning, a piece of mail that required scanning went from my box with a NOTE on it requesting it be scanned (never was) to the Carlsbad 92011 Post Office (Never Scanned) to the San Diego Sort Center (Never Scanned) and God knows where else. The FIRST SCAN was 4 days later in Indianapolis where some conscientious person actually did their job and scanned it. Half way across the country and 4 days later before anyone scanned it. We presumed it may have been lost. Great service, eh?
Yet the Postal Service continues to advertise their wonderful services with pricey television commercials and thtat costly Spiderman theme. Why not spend that money on actually doing the job we pay them for. Privatize the whole damned thing and let the chips fall where they may. Dump the Postal Unions so they can get rid of the useless slackers who don't do their jobs. We must have a bunch of them locally because why else would the mail be in such a mess?
Here we go again. Just when we thought we were getting enough of a screwing from the shippers who advertised one type of shipping and then used another, we now have yet another contender in the ring for slow shipper of the year. DHL Global Mail.
First off it frosts me to see a merchant state they will ship my order by FedEx and have the FedEx logo emblazoned all over their site. Then find out after the order is shipped that it has gone out FedEx SmartPost which in reality should be named StupidPost since it can take ten days for a package to travel a relatively short distance that U.S. Mail alone could handle in a few days. It starts out with FedEx and eventually ends up in the hands of your postal carrier for delivery. You note I said eventually since sometimes it doesn't happen for a long, long time. I've had packages never show up and the services point fingers at each other as to who lost the item. In many cases this is not even "free shipping", so you end up paying for the slowness too.
UPS Mail Innovations is no better. Merchants advertise they will ship by UPS and then use this snail-like service. They have the same modus operandi where the package starts out with UPS and at some point is transferred to the USPS for further handling and then carriage to your home or post box. One of the HUGE glitches in both of these systems is that the package can sit in a postal distribution center for days before it is transferred to the local post office because the paperwork has not been sent electronically to the Post Office to match the package. Or, the electronic paperwork is there and the package has not arrived, so you have no idea where the package actually is, but it is "in transit."
Enter DHL Global Mail, the new kid on the block. Or maybe that should be the new kid on the blockade as merchants find cheaper ways to get our mail to us slower and slower. Frankly, you need to complain and complain loud if you find your order is being shipped this way. Be careful to look at your order and ask how it's being shipped. Tell merchants if they ship this way you won't do business with them.
One example is Amazon's "Super Saver Shipping" which is supposedly "free". A shipment costs $9.49 or about ten percent of the value of the item and that is deducted as "free shipping". However, my FedEx regular shipping would only take 5 days and would cost no more, so why ship via Smart Post and let the customer wait 8 days? Because the merchant let me think I was saving over nine bucks while they were probably paying four or five at best.
Holiday season will be coming, thousands will not receive their gifts on time to give them for the holiday and you can thank the merchants who use these snail trail oozing services for that. And yourself if you don't ask first. The bottom line is to just say no and spend a couple of extra dollars for Priority Mail or some service that gets you what you want when YOU want it! Or get a shipping account and make the merchant charge the shipping to you! That's a novel idea they don't like because they can't pad the shipping costs!
Here's a surprise...you spend ten bucks to ship a package and the Postal Service misroutes it within its own unit then doesn't update the tracking information. Why? Because they don't want you to know just how badly they might have screwed up the shipping of a simple priority mail package.
Let's start with the facts. This package was handed to the carrier about noon on July 1st. How in hell it didn't get scanned by the Post Office about three miles away until after 3 AM the next morning is way beyond my comprehension. And then the real screw up starts as follows:
What is so weird is that apparently the Post Office KNOWS it has missent the package at 8:17 AM but continues the sort and sends it on out for delivery at 8:37 AM anyway and 14 hours later doesn't update the status of the package because they likely don't know where in hell it is, or don't want anyone to know how badly they mishandled it! And 15 hours later there is still no indication where that package might be. It should be in the hands of the recipient but that isn't going to happen on time!
So, the USPS wants me to trust them with all my shipping. And touts two to three day shipping to boot. Yet why won't they give me a refund if it takes them a week to get my package to the receiver, when it's clearly their fault? Not the weather or another act of God? It's the idiocy of the incompetent postal service at work. Sad that there are some good employees and some idiots who cannot get their crap straight if it were on their head. This isn't the first time this has happened but it's the most recent and it's documented it's Carlsbad that screwed up so no tossing the blame this time. Nice work folks. And you worry about your jobs? I bitch about SmartPost, but at half the cost, maybe it does take ten days, but you're getting in the same category for twice the price.
July 6 Update: With no further scanning except the delivery scan, the package arrived on July 6. The 2-3 day Priority Mail took 0ver 5 days to get there, which in itself is probably no biggie considering there was a holiday, but not to scan it at any time after they bobbled it locally? Shows the quality of the USPS. Sorry, if bankruptcy is on the horizon, they're doing it all by themselves.
Once again, I need to post on how poorly the U. S. Postal Service has become in delivery of the mail. There are pluses and minuses in this, so hang in there for a few moments while I explain:
1. I have no problem with the cost of a First Class stamp. To send a letter across the country for 46 cents is a bargain in my book. Even if the price increases just about every year, it's still a bargain. Of course, many now use e-mail since we can be more likely to know it actually reaches the other party than we can by regular mail. And it takes seconds instead of two or three or sometimes 5 days.
2. The postal service does a splendid job in getting all those junk mailers to your mailbox on time. You know, those crappy newspaper-like pieces of junk that you either have to trash or recycle. The bulk mailers dream because they get reduced rates while your postage stamp keeps rising in cost. The postal service says bulk mailers keep them in business. So, if that's true, and most of us dislike the seemingly tons of crap mail we get monthly, maybe this dissolution issue isn't that bad after all.
3. The costs keep rising on Priority Mail packages, yet I get more misdirected packages than ever. Recently, I have had packages make it all the way across the United States to California, only to end up being sent to cities east of where they should have gone, when the address is clear on the package. That's incompetent #1. I know the routes are sorted by Incompetent #2 at the next post office but really, the mail person who puts it on the truck for delivery can't read and see it's the wrong city, so they carry it around all day? That's Incompetent #3. Then, they simply show no delivery update late at night, no transfer to the right post office by the next morning, nothing. So who knows where the package is now! When will the package arrive? Who knows. A day late, two days? Good question.
4. Example: Package shipped from Santa Ana to San Diego. Gets sent from Santa Ana to another post office north of there and then to Santa Clarita. Goes through Santa Clarita apparently twice and finally comes back south after two additional days. This should have been a one day shipment that took four days. More incompetence, but the Postal Service can blame it on either automated handling or incompetence. Guess which one they will choose?
5. I shipped a large envelope to New Hampshire and it went round and round at the same post office, coming up on the tracking system for 5 days as processed and then processed again and again. Finally after several phone calls (The offices neatly hide their numbers so you have to call an 800 number to be placed in touch) they were able to release it from its' carousel prison and the recipient got it over a week late. Great service.
6. When our usual carrier, who is excellent, is not on duty, the route is split among a group of other carriers to handle. Thus outgoing packages sit in the heat for ten hours awaiting pickup, since it seems the team of 6 extra carriers can't do what one carrier usually does, pick up by noon every day. Add some extra work to their schedule and the whole system breaks down, mail is picked up at least 6 hours later than usual. I wonder what the Easter candy looks like after that extra heat soak?
7. There are commercials on television sponsored by the National Letter Carriers about not letting the Postal Service stop Saturday delivery. A bit self-serving, don't you think? Same with businesses. Maybe if there was some efficiency in mail services and delivery, the Postal Service wouldn't be in the shape it is? Maybe if they didn't piss off those who ship regularly with them, and make us want to ship with another source, they could also improve their revenue stream?
8. The Postal Service whines about going bankrupt. Just like the automakers did, they want a bailout. But, don't expect any bailout of the Postal Service to ever be paid back. Because it will always be a losing proposition. The USPS couldn't possibly raise rates enough to keep themselves afloat, as businesses will continue to turn to lower cost shippers such as FedEx and UPS, among others. Businesses whine over possible lack of 6 day delivery but they could do fine in most cases with four days. Let them pay for special services such as 5 or 6 day delivery. Cut residential delivery to 3 days a week. Billions could be saved right there with little inconvenience to consumers. We don't need junk mail and magazines daily and most people now do their banking on line. Federal checks now require direct deposit, so no whining from federal benefits recipients about their checks being late either.
9. Rates charged are exorbitant for larger packages, forcing loyal customers to other services for many shipments. As an example, I shipped three boxes to Pennsylvania and Oklahoma and compared rates for three day delivery between my home ZIP code for USPS, FedEx and USPS for each piece. For three day service to Oklahoma, the USPS wanted $47.29 for one 12 lb box and FedEx charged $22.00. The second package the USPS wanted $28.84 Parcel Post, FedEx Ground shipped for $10.00. The third box, USPS wanted $20.20 Parcel Post and FedEx Ground shipped for $10.23. Less than half the price and arrived on time. Why pay over $50 more for USPS service?
I support the USPS and have for years. But it's growing tiresome having shipments misrouted and the same old lame excuses. The local post office apologizes but they usually are the scapegoat for a much bigger problem. Incompetency all along the line. Failure to force workers to perform. Those that do good work seem to be vilified and those that don't slide their way to a nice retirement.
I worked for the postal service 50 years ago. It was a wasteful service back then and I can only imagine how much that wastefulness has multiplied over all these years. If it is even anything like it was back then, no bailout will help, this year or any other. They are driving a vehicle that is far overdue for the crusher and the unions, I would guess, are driving it into the jaws of the shredder at breakneck speed. Unlike the automakers, the postal service has little new to offer or sell, no new glitzy models, no new speeds to thrill, not even a new found competence to razzle dazzle the old customers. Just the same old promise to deliver in rain, sleet, maybe in snow, and if the carrier can find the right house, or if the mail isn't misdirected. Quasi-governmental never works.
Just as a point...here;'s a recent timeline of mishandling.....

Shipper busts his butt to get it out on time and then...it gets misrouted. Nothing like time sensitive service. Not from the USPS.
